La Perouse occupies the northern headland at the entrance to Botany Bay, about 13.5 km south of the city in the City of Randwick. It is named after the French navigator whose expedition arrived in January 1788, and the headland carries the Laperouse Monument, the museum in the old cable station and the 1885 fort on Bare Island. Most of the surrounding land is Kamay Botany Bay National Park, with the NSW Golf Club nearby, so the residential area is small and building work means rebuilds, additions and secondary dwellings.
